Setting a budget when traveling can be so hard because, of course, you want to get the whole experience. But, a budget is crucial, or your spending will quickly rack up, which can cause issues if you don’t bring enough cash!
Typically when I pick a destination to travel to, I already have a general idea of what I want to do while there and how much I want to spend. So the first thing I do is set a tight budget on what I am willing to pay. This will help me prioritize my cash distribution while mapping out my trip.
Everyone’s Budget will look different because everyone has different situations.
I am in the depths of planning my Houston trip, so I figured I would share the Budget I developed. Kyle and I, so two people, are doing a weekend in Houston, so two nights. Below is how I distributed our Budget.
Weekend Trip for 2 People
Total Budget: $1000
A place to Stay: $400
I went with a more expensive hotel because it was centrally located among the excursions I wanted to do.
Excursions: $150
Before traveling, I determine what I want to do, how much it will cost, and sometimes even purchase my tickets ahead of time.
Food & Drinks: $200
I feed two people three meals per day, so I always account for a little extra spending on food.
Travel: $100
If we do not take the trailer, we drive our more gas-friendly car, reducing travel costs.
Gifts/Souvenirs: $50
I am a sucker for something small from everywhere, so I give myself a little spending cash.
Back up cash: $100
THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE! Life happens, so be prepared. The place you are going to might not have your bank or technology, so always come prepared.
Now you may be thinking $1000 is a lot for one weekend, but this is for two people, and I have accounted for almost $200 of extra cash to help buffer spending areas you might not be able to plan for. It would be best if you always had buffer cash if something happens. That cash could come in handy for fixing a flat tire, additional drinks or food, gifts you have to have, and so much more.
Hopefully, this helps guide your next trip.
