Make or Break a Habit

Happy Friday Friends! I hope y’all have been having a great week and have lots of fun things planned for this weekend. I have been playing catch up the last few days because my school has been closed due to the weather. Seriously needed that extra little weekend in the middle of this week lol. With it being the start of a new month, I thought it would be fun to start a series of Friday posts that revolve around life hacks. The first hack is a goal making blog post. I’m sure we all have that one habit we wish we could break. Or, maybe you have a habit you would like to incorporate in your daily routine. Well, today I will be talking about ways to make or break a habit.

Psychologists say that it can take 21 days to either make or break a habit. With it being the start of the shortest month of the year, why not challenge yourself to go a full 28 days to make or break your habit. Over the last sixish months, I had been working on breaking a handful of bad habits I was doing. I feel pretty accomplished if the habits I have broken, so I figured for this month I am going to try and create a good habit. I’m terrible at drinking that amount of water my body needs daily. So, this month I’m going to try and make the habit of drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day.

Everyone’s habits are going to look different and some may be harder than others. Somethings to keep in mind while picking a habit:

Don’t pick something you know will be impossible

Pick something that’s worth your time

Be realistic with your expectations

Do this to help yourself

They may sound like common sense reminders but don’t shoot to run five miles every day for the month if you don’t normally run.

Once you’ve picked a habit you want to change, make adjustments in your life that will help you succeed in reaching your goal. Reaching a goal is much easier when you set yourself up for success instead of just going into an unknown situation. If you know ways to already be successful that’s great, if not here are some tips:

Team up with a friend

Create some type of a reminder

Reward yourself for your mini victories

Use the word “but” to overcome negative talk

Be confident in yourself and the success you plan to achieve on this habit making/breaking goal. Sometimes doing things like this can be fun because you discover things you might not have even known about yourself.

Some bad habits I have managed to end over the last few months range from all over the spectrum. I was able to stop biting my nails, cut back on my coffee consumption, stopped saying “it can wait” literally all the time, and a few others. Excited to reverse the process and begin creating good habits. Besides drinking more water, I hope to add daily prayer, wake up the first time my alarm goes off, and preparing everything before bed. Excited to see how this next month is going to go!
